The Maine Retirement Place

Although Arizona and Florida are the top choice states for retirement, they also attract a lot of younger people. Drawn by the desirable weather, the influx of people under the age of twenty-five has lowered the median age of these two states.

Currently, Maine is the state boasting the highest median age of residents. That age is 40.6 years. West Virginia and Vermont tie for second place with the median age of 40.2 years. This could lead some to believe that more retirees are choosing Maine for their twilight years.

The fact of the matter is not that Maine is attracting senior adults. The pull of warmer climates and longer outdoor activity seasons has reached more of the younger set, thus affecting demographics across the nation. This, coupled with more senior adults waiting later before moving to retirement areas in warmer climates or becoming snowbirds, has affected the demographics across the nation.
