IDENTITY THEFT

Identity theft is a serious crime in America.  There are some basic things you can do to help prevent someone from stealing your personal information.

  1. Open all of your mail.  If your name, address, phone number, Social Security number, etc., appear on the mail, shred it.  Even shred the envelope.

  2. Protect your Social Security number.  Do not use it on your driver’s license or checks.  Keep your card in a secure place in your home.

  3. Beware of camera phones.  Keep your license and credit cards out of the camera’s view.

  4. Double-check your credit card when it is returned to you after making a charge.  Be sure it is yours and not a phony.

  5. When purging your files and throwing away old records, shred them.

  6. Carefully check your credit card bills to verify charges, making sure that false charges are not listed.  If you find such charges, call the credit card company immediately.

  7. Question any request to verify your bank account number, Social Security number, or credit card numbers—whether by mail or by telephone.  DO NOT GIVE OUT THIS INFORMATION.

  8. If you have a computer, avoid giving out your personal information.  Update your computer’s virus protection regularly.

  9. Check your credit records periodically to guarantee they are correct.

  10. Invest in a locked mailbox whether at home or at the post office.  Also, mail letters containing checks at the post office and not through an unlocked mailbox as they may be stolen.

  11. Guard your unused checks.  Keep them in a safe place.

  12. If you suspect fraud or can prove illegal transactions, report them to your creditors or the police immediately.

If you suspect a case of identity theft, contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or call toll-free:  1-877-438-4338.
